About Compass Vermont
Vermont News From All Directions
A trusted source for evidence-first reporting and transparent analysis.
Compass Vermont is an independent, digitally native newsroom dedicated to careful, document-based reporting on public policy, governance, and civic life in Vermont. Our mission is to help readers understand what public claims and official actions show when examined against primary sources and publicly available records.
Founded in 2020, Compass Vermont was built on the belief that strong journalism should equip readers — not tell them what to think. We focus on transparency, structured analysis, and clarity so Vermonters can make their own informed decisions.
What We Do
Compass Vermont examines what is said, what is reported, and what the records actually show. We cover issues that affect Vermonters with depth and context, offering:
Document-based reporting — Emphasis on public records, official reports, and primary sources
Analytical clarity — Explanation of claims alongside data, metrics, and definitions
Neutral framing — Facts presented without partisan commentary
Statewide coverage — News and analysis from all parts of Vermont
We do not publish automated content. Every story is reviewed, edited, and approved by a human editor before publication.
How We Work
Compass Vermont uses a structured research and verification process that prioritizes accuracy and context. Modern research and analysis tools assist with document review and organization, but all editorial decisions and final writing are made by our editorial team.
Our model is lean by design. Rather than relying on a traditional newsroom structure, we focus on disciplined workflow, thorough source review, and clear reporting.
Bylines
Compass Vermont is independently operated. Reporting, writing, and editorial decisions are handled by the publication’s founder. Rather than emphasize individual bylines, Compass places its focus on the reporting process, source documentation, and editorial accountability of the publication itself.
Leadership
Compass Vermont was founded by Tom Davis, a Vermont native and veteran media editor and publisher with decades of experience building digital publications. Prior to Compass Vermont, Tom led independent news outlets in multiple markets and has a long record of developing engaged readerships through careful, accountable reporting.
In addition to his role with Compass Vermont, Tom serves as the Economic Development Director for the Town of Northfield, Vermont. Compass Vermont is operated entirely outside of his municipal hours and without use of public resources.
Subscription
Compass Vermont is free to read. We offer optional paid subscriptions for readers who choose to support the ongoing work of the newsroom. Paid support helps sustain in-depth reporting, but all content remains freely accessible.
