Grandmother Aids Police in Locating St. Johnsbury Man Who Kidnapped His Minor Stepson
On the afternoon of August 6, 2025, the St Johnsbury Police Department met with a female who had custody of her grandson. The female explained the child had been allowed visitation with his stepfather, Jason Langmaid, 50, of St Johnsbury, with an understanding he was to return the child on the morning of August 6, 2025.
The family tried to contact Langmaid repeatedly until all communications stopped.
Based on statements taken, an Amber Alert was issued, and the child was entered into NCIC. The investigation led to the discovery that Langmaid and the minor child were in the Watertown, NY area.
Efforts were coordinated with New York State Police and shortly after 2000 hours, Langmaid was located and taken into custody, and the minor child was found to be safe and uninjured.
A warrant was granted for Langmaid who is being charged with kidnapping, Habitual Offender, Unlawful Restraint 1st Degree, Unlawful Restraint 2nd Degree, and Custodial Interference. Langmaid will be lodged in New York pending his extradition to Vermont to answer the charges.
Note - the original posting of this story incorrectly identified the child as a female. The minor was a male.
