MONTPELIER, VT —The Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Colleges System (VSCS) received the name recommendation for the new institution unifying Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College: Vermont State University.

VSCS hired a marketing company specializing in higher education marketing and conducted focus groups and other research methods that included audiences connected to all three schools before presenting their recommendation.

Because Vermont State University uses a nationally established and well-recognized naming convention, we have an incredible opportunity to shape the brand and identity of the university," said VSCS Chancellor Sophie Zdatny.

The VSCS is seeking public comment on the name in advance of the Board decision on Wednesday, September 29. Public comments are welcome and will be shared with the Board in advance of the meeting.

The Board will also hold a listening session on Wednesday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. during the Board meeting at To sign up to speak at the Board meeting, visit
