A special legislative committee heard this week that it could maximize state revenues by imposing high tax rates on betting sites, but there's more than just money at stake here - some states have opted to put taxes up near 50%.
The Sports Betting Study Committee will recommend minimums like 20% or less so people don't switch their illegal behavior out onto legal ones which can lead them into further debt because they're spending too much without earning anything back from those losing bets.
The committee is expected to present a proposal to legalize sports betting to the full Legislature in January.
