The state of Vermont is anticipated to allow online sports betting in the coming year, but officials must first decide on an appropriate age restriction for the new gambling venue.

Teenagers are more prone than adults to become addicted to gambling, according to research. Rep. Matt Birong of Vergennes says he supports making internet sports betting require a minimum age of 21. It at least places restrictions on a group of people who are currently the target of a lot of marketing, he said.
Eight states allow gambling at the age of 18, and another nine allow 18 year olds with restrictions like only casinos that don't serve alcohol. The remaining states limit gambling to persons 21 and older.
Birong is a member of a nine-person group drafting new legislation for the upcoming legislative session. To discourage individuals from gambling more, the committee also wants to forbid the usage of credit cards on websites that provide gambling.
