FREEDOM AND UNITY

Vermont cofounder and Green Mountain Boy Ira Allen (Ethan's younger brother) is credited with authoring our state's motto:  Freedom and Unity.

Wikipedia says that "there is general agreement that Vermont's motto is about the idea of balancing two seemingly opposite ideals: the personal freedom and independence of the individual citizen, with the common good of the larger community."

We say, we can't always define it, but we know it when we see it.

The stories relayed in this section of Compass Vermont seek to reflect the people and events that embody our state motto, and make the Vermont spirit the fabric that keeps us warm even on the coldest winter night.
